Teachers honored during April LSC meeting

Lane’s Local School Council (LSC) met on April 25 to discuss changes to the school and to its budget. The Debate Team was commended for their victory in the National Urban Debate League Championship, becoming the first team in the competition’s history to win two years in a row. Music teachers Mark and Paul Carrera and Drama teacher Ms. Hanson were commended for their dedication to Lane and their support towards their students.

Teachers Honored

  • Though they were not present at the meeting, Choir teachers Mark and Paul Carrera were commended for their work in the Lane community and the dedication they show towards their students.
  • The LSC also commended Hanson for her service to the Lane community. A parent wrote a letter to the LSC thanking Hanson for the support she showed her daughter during her transition to Lane. Hanson and the student, Catie Mitchell, were praised and awarded with flowers during the meeting.

Principal Report

  • Mr. Tennison spoke about upcoming AP and SAT testing, highlighting the stress around campus during this time.
  • A race-relations committee has been formed, run by both students and faculty.

Budget

  • The budget has been received and approved.
  • Bids for next year’s budget have been filed and received.
  • The bid for the renovation of Gym 1 was substantially higher than anticipated. They will not be moving forward with the renovation and bidding will be rescheduled.
  • May 1 is the estimated deadline for budget spending.

Community Survey Changes

  • Based on surveys sent out to students, there will be changes made to Advisory. College prep lessons will replace the current “social-emotional lessons.” These will occur during the second Advisory of every month.
  • The board discussed changes they intend to make to the community surveys. In the future, they would like to administer surveys that would allow better input from Lane parents and teachers.
  • Mr. Tennison expressed a desire to include parents in school decisions, and the board discussed the best ways to do so.
  • The LSC also addressed the switch to the ASPEN system and the difficulties the transition has created. Tennison assured that the school is doing its best to facilitate a smooth transition and is attempting to fix the problems users are experiencing.

Spending Approvals

  • New Government and American History textbooks
  • Gym uniforms for next year
  • A Physics field trip to Six Flags Great America
  • Student and teacher planners for next year
  • Online access to chemistry books
  • 4 new Chromebook carts

All suggestions were approved by the board.

Fundraiser Approval

  • Ceramics and Printmaking will sell bowls, cups, and other crafts May 6-10 to raise money for the Art Department.

 

The next LSC meeting will be held May 16.
